The Lantern: A New England Folk Oracle by Laura Tempest Zakroff
Ships end of July 2026
From the cultural, colonial, and maritime lore of New England comes a new set of oracle decks, steeped in the tea of our ancestors: The Lantern by Laura Tempest Zakroff. These hand-painted images by the artist and author glimmer with magic from the land and its spirits, as well as the spirits of the sea.
This deck explores the symbolism and stories of cultural archetypes, landmarks, architecture, artifacts, flora, fauna, and even cryptids and spirits. For example, the infamous fountain in front of the Providence Athenaeum makes an appearance in the Land deck, as does a haunted covered bridge from Vermont, and a “spite” house found in Boston. There’s a watch from Waltham, Massachusetts (see above), iconic Shaker brooms and native baskets, a taste of coffee milk and donuts, a rat who receives letters, as well as the reliable Morgan horse.
The spooky folklore spans multiple communities and origins, from the indigenous forest spirit Pukwudgie and ghostly Specter Moose of Maine to the infamous Rhode Island vampires and Champ of Lake Champlain.
Details: 48 cards, 3.25" x 5"
Card stock: 350 GSM with smooth matte laminate (very sturdy)
Edge treatment: bronze metallic
Boxes: 2-part upright "jewelry box" w/ detachable fitted top, with rose-petal laminate and spot varnish
