Divine energy is often referred to in terms of the masculine and the feminine, but there's so much more to divine energy than a binary system. Divine energy encompasses all things. Whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant because Divine energy is part of us all regardless of religious beliefs. You can see the spectrum of the divine within the tarot as well. Below is the Gold Lyre Tarot.
Let's get a little personal for a minute. My immediate family are spiritual people, not Christian per se, but spiritual. My grandmas (both maternal and paternal) believed in God, but they never went to church and never made me go to church. I wasn't brought up to disbelieve...it just kind of happened. The first time someone I loved died, I lost faith in the belief that one god controls everything. I couldn't believe in a god that would cause so much pain on purpose. That's when I started asking questions.
I read every book I could find on religion, not just the one I was brought up to believe in, but all religions. My mom gladly supplied me with books to feed my interest and willingly let me form my own beliefs. I'm eternally grateful for that freedom. The only thing that really fit how I felt at the time was Wicca, but the binary system of worship really bothered me. I couldn't bring myself to worship the divine in that way knowing that there was so much more than just two facets of life.
The more I read, the more I learned about Divine energy and its fluidity. There have been deities defying the binary for ages whether it's through same-sex relationships or other queer identities. With a little digging, you can find deities or aspects of religion in every culture that defy our modern binary idea of Divine energy. There are deities engaged in same-sex relationships, gender fluid deities, transgender deities, genderless deities, and so on. The more I discovered this, the more I realized that we are a mirror of Divine energy and therefore, Divine energy couldn't be defined as one of two things.
Divine energy is a spectrum. The more we embrace this, the easier it will be for us to sync up with it. We all have aspects of the Divine within us regardless of our chosen gender. There are so many ways to describe the Divine, so next time you're struggling with Divine gender, remember that deities are as fluid as we are. Our spiritual tools should reflect this spectrum as well. Decks like the ones shown here, Gold Lyre Tarot and Noble Moon Tarot, are perfect examples of bending the binary.
